EOD QUICK RESPONSE AND CLEARANCE
In the period 2007-2009, Project RENEW expanded its operation to embrace Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) capacity in partnership with international mine action organizations including Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA) and Golden West Humanitarian Foundation (GWHF). These organizations have provided technical assistance and training, and supporting deployment of additional teams to meet the needs of mobile EOD response and ERW clearance in contaminated areas.
Now, for the first time since Project RENEW’s launch in 2001, our organization is fully staffed with teams of qualified and capable EOD operators who are trained and equipped to undertake whole range of ERW clearance tasks in response to public safety needs and development requirements of local authorities.
This capacity has been built up through field operations during the past two years in Trieu Phong and Cam Lo Districts, which resulted in 240,000 square meters that were cleaned up and released for safe development activities. Approximately 7,000 items of ERW were destroyed during this operational period.
With the mission to remove the risk of death or injury which the local population faces everyday, through safe removal and destruction of ERW, Project RENEW is committed to continuing deployment of two EOD mobile quick response teams and one ERW clearance team, with major technical and financial support committed by NPA.
During 2010-2011, the following activities will be carried out:
- Continue EOD quick response in Cam Lo and Trieu Phong Districts.
- Introduce more cost efficient “Land Release” methodologies (safe and systematic turnover of cleared land) for testing and potential application in areas that need ERW clearance.
- Reduce the number of accidents involving scrap metal collectors and dealers by collecting and destroying ERW from “Temporary Bins for Munitions” or TBMs at scrap yards, a system established by Project RENEW during the past two years.
