INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

Information is critical for effective management of mine action programs. Efficient and accurate systems for handling data are an essential tool for analyzing survey results and assessing progress in clearance of explosive remnants of war (ERW). Since its inception, Project RENEW has focused attention on building a mine action database in support of other mine action components.
During 2002-2006, in cooperation with various donors and technical partners, Project RENEW undertook the first landmine impact survey and data collection effort in the province. Outcomes included a 2002 level one UXO survey in Trieu Phong District and a 2006 Knowledge-Awareness-Practices (KAP) survey and victim survey province-wide.
A recent study in collaboration with Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA and the Hue Center for Social Sciences and Humanities was a survey on scrap metal collection in three provinces of Thua Thien Hue, Quang Tri, and Quang Binh.
Since 2008, Project RENEW has been supported by NPA to strengthen and develop its existing information system with the introduction and integration of the new “TechBase” concept developed by NPA – a comprehensive record management programme for coordinating mine action information. Joint efforts are now underway to introduce a bilingual version of TechBase, to be applied uniformly for Project RENEW’s demining work and to be shared with other NGOs working the field, to standardize and consolidate reports. Project RENEW is committed to completing construction of the database, finalizing standard operational procedures and readying the system to share with others in support of further development of the province’s mine action management capacity.
